Canadian web hosting

Short answer

Web Hosting Canada says it is a privately owned Montreal company with servers on the Canadian East and West coasts. CanSpace says it is a 100% Canadian company and that all servers sit in Canada on its web hosting page, with Beauharnois, Quebec named for dedicated servers. CACloud says Canadian Web Hosting is a BC-registered company with facilities in Toronto and Vancouver. HostPapa was founded in Canada but lists data centres in multiple countries on its data-centres page, so ownership and server location are different questions.

Canadian-owned versus servers in Canada

A .ca domain or a “hosting in Canada” badge is not the same as a Canadian owner. This table separates ultimate ownership from where the company says your site files sit.

Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud offer Canada regions operated by US parents. Those are not Canadian operators even when you pick Montreal or Toronto.

Comparison

Verdicts use the digital services rubric, not the grocery score. A Canada region on a foreign cloud is not a Canadian operator. Notes about PIPEDA or the US CLOUD Act are not legal advice.

What these labels do not tell you

HostPapa sells from Canada but lists data centres outside Canada on its data-centres page. That can still fit your needs when you pick a Canadian plan, but it is not the same as an all-Canada footprint.

There is no single government-run web host. Public-sector sites use a mix of private Canadian hosts and global clouds.

Questions

Is HostPapa Canadian web hosting?

HostPapa was founded in Canada and sells through hostpapa.ca, but its data-centres page lists facilities outside Canada. That differs from WHC’s Canadian coast servers and CanSpace’s Beauharnois datacentre on CanSpace’s dedicated-server page.

Do Canadian web hosts keep my site in Canada?

Only if the plan you buy says so. WHC’s Canadian web hosting page cites East and West coast servers. CanSpace’s dedicated-server page cites Beauharnois, Quebec. HostPapa lists global data-centre choices on its data-centres page.

Is an AWS Canada region Canadian hosting?

No. AWS regions in Montreal or Calgary are still Amazon Web Services, a US company. A Canada region is a location choice, not Canadian ownership.

Is CanSpace 100% Canadian?

CanSpace’s homepage states it is a 100% Canadian company. Its web hosting page says all servers are in Canada, and its dedicated-server page names Beauharnois, Quebec for dedicated machines.
