Canadian alternatives to Gmail
Last verified:
Short answer
Several companies in Canada sell email and say the mail stays in the country. None of them is a free, ad-supported inbox with Gmail’s reach. If you want a Canadian operator, you are looking at a paid host, or at NorthMail’s free mailbox with ads. Proton Mail is the private service people often compare, and Proton is Swiss, not Canadian.
What you are replacing
Gmail is Google’s consumer email service. Google lists an office in Mountain View.
A Canada region on a US company’s servers is a different fact from a Canadian company holding the mail. The rows below keep those apart.
Google’s locations page lists the Googleplex in Mountain View among its offices. That list is not a legal headquarters filing.
Comparison
Verdicts use the digital services rubric, not the grocery score. A Canada region on a foreign cloud is not a Canadian operator. Notes about PIPEDA or the US CLOUD Act are not legal advice.

That infrastructure claim is the company’s statement and is not independently audited. | Paid. On the pricing page, Starter is CA$1.00 a month, or CA$0.80 a month on the longest prepay shown. Basic is CA$6.39 a month before that discount. Seven-day trial. | A paid private inbox from a company that says it runs its own Canadian servers. | Canadian-operated, data in CanadaConfidence: Medium |
| OSMail | Says it is Canadian-owned and operated since 2011, and that OSMail is a product of easier.digital. | 42 Powers Court, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, on the site footer. | Says data is stored entirely in Canada. | The company says it is not built on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud, and that it runs its own infrastructure. Where there is no true Canadian option
There are Canadian email hosts. There is no Canadian equivalent of a free Gmail account tied to Google Drive, Docs, and Android. Typewire, OSMail, Thexyz, and PolarisMail are paid. NorthMail’s free tier is ad-supported and much smaller.
Hushmail stores mail in Canada and says its parent is a Delaware company. Proton Mail is based in Geneva. Both are useful comparisons. Neither is a Canadian-owned operator.
Questions
Is there a free Canadian Gmail?
Not one we could verify at Gmail’s scale. NorthMail lists a free ad-supported mailbox at 1 GB. The other Canadian hosts on this page charge a fee. Proton has a free account and is Swiss.
Does a .ca email address mean the mail is stored in Canada?
No. The domain ending is not the server location. Read the host’s own page for where the mailbox sits. A Canadian-sounding brand can still rent US cloud space.
Does Canadian hosting block the US CLOUD Act?
We are not giving legal advice. Some vendors on this page say a Canadian company and Canadian servers change which government can demand the data. That is their claim. A lawyer, not this page, is who can apply that to your situation.
Why is Hushmail not in the Canadian-operated band?
Hushmail’s privacy policy says the parent is a Delaware company and that the Canadian subsidiary operates the Vancouver and Calgary servers. Data in Canada and a US parent are both true on that page, so the band says so.
