Canadian alternatives to Google Workspace
Last verified:
Short answer
A full office suite that is Canadian-owned, open for signup, and priced in public is hard to find. Soomi describes itself as that suite and is still taking invitations, with pricing not finalized. cDox covers documents and spreadsheets on servers it describes as independent hardware in Montreal. Microsoft 365 can place some business data in a Canada region and remains a US company.
What you are replacing
Google Workspace is Google’s paid mail, files, and docs bundle. We could not open a current Google data-regions document in this check, so Workspace residency is unverified here.
Microsoft 365 is the other suite people leave. Microsoft’s data-locations page lists Canada among local region geographies that can get stronger residency commitments for some services. That is a region setting inside a US company’s cloud.
Google’s locations page lists the Googleplex in Mountain View among its offices. That list is not a legal headquarters filing.
Comparison
Verdicts use the digital services rubric, not the grocery score. A Canada region on a foreign cloud is not a Canadian operator. Notes about PIPEDA or the US CLOUD Act are not legal advice.
| Name | Ownership / parent | HQ | Data residency | Infrastructure | Pricing | Best for | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soomi | Homepage says 100% Canadian-owned. The story page says no US entity and no US staff. | The pages we opened say Canada and do not name a city. City is unverified. | Says data stays in Canada, with encryption keys held in Canada. | Says hosted in Canada and that there is no US data centre. The FAQ says the suite is built on Nextcloud Hub’s core components with a managed layer. It does not say Soomi owns the data centre building. | No public price. The FAQ says pricing is not finalized, there is no free tier, and you see the price before you commit. Signup is by invitation. A tariff offer on the homepage is 25% off the base package for up to 30 seats, with no price increase for two years. | Teams waiting for a Canadian-hosted suite, if an invitation and an unpublished price are acceptable. | Canadian-owned, hosted in CanadaConfidence: Medium |
| cDox | cDox says it is a Canadian company. A parent company was not named on the pages we opened. | City of the company is not stated separately. Servers are described as being in Montreal. | Says documents live on servers in Montreal. | Says independent bare-metal servers in Montreal. That is the company’s claim of running its own hardware, and it is not independently audited. | Free tier with 50 MB and up to 3 public links. Pro is $8 a month or $70 a year for 500 MB. The page does not label the currency. | Writing and spreadsheets, not a full mail and meetings suite. | Canadian-operated, data in CanadaConfidence: Low |
| Microsoft 365 | Microsoft. Not a Canadian company. A headquarters city was not on the data-locations page we used, so it is not stated here. | Unverified on the page we cited. The data-locations document does not name a head-office city. | Microsoft lists Canada as a local region geography. Some tenants in those geographies can buy stronger residency commitments for specific services. It is not the default for every plan. | Microsoft’s own cloud. A Canada region is still Microsoft’s infrastructure. | Paid subscriptions. We did not re-quote a plan price in this check. | Organizations that need Microsoft’s apps and can turn on a Canada data location. Not a Canadian operator. | Foreign company, Canada region availableConfidence: High |
| Google Workspace | Google. Not a Canadian company. See the company info page. | Mountain View office, on Google’s locations page. | Unverified. A Google data-regions document we tried to open was not available during this check. | Google’s own service. | Paid plans. We did not re-quote prices in this check. | Staying with Google. It is the incumbent on this page, not a Canadian alternative. | Not a Canadian optionConfidence: Medium |
Where there is no true Canadian option
There is no generally available Canadian Workspace clone with a public price that we could verify on 1 October 2026. Soomi says it is 100% Canadian-owned and hosted in Canada, and its FAQ says pricing is still being finalized, there is no free tier, and signup is by invitation.
cDox is narrower on purpose. It is documents and spreadsheets, not mail, calendar, and meetings as a suite. OSMail, on the Gmail page, is closer to mail plus Nextcloud files, and it quotes rather than listing a suite price.
Buying Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace with a Canada data region does not make the vendor Canadian. The region and the owner are different rows in the table.
Questions
Can I switch to a Canadian Google Workspace this month?
Not to a like-for-like suite with a public price, based on what we could open. Soomi is invitation-only and has not published a final price. cDox is documents and spreadsheets. Mail hosts are on the Gmail page.
Does Microsoft 365 in the Canada region count as Canadian?
No. Microsoft’s documentation lists Canada as a place some customer data can stay. Microsoft is still the operator. The band on this page is “Foreign company, Canada region available.”
Is a vendor’s CLOUD Act claim legal advice?
No. Soomi, cDox, and others describe which law they believe applies. This site does not. If a contract depends on it, ask counsel.
