Our story

fyiCanada started at the start of 2025, as the tariff dispute between the United States and Canada began. Almost overnight, a question many of us had rarely thought about became part of everyday shopping: is this actually Canadian?

The answer is often harder to find than it should be. A maple leaf on the box doesn't tell you where something was made. A familiar Canadian name doesn't tell you who owns the company today. And “Made in Canada” and “Product of Canada” mean different things, with rules most shoppers never see.

So we set out to build a Canadian site with one job: help Canadians find, choose and buy Canadian.

Today fyiCanada lists more than 7,400 Canadian products across more than 280 categories. Over 1,300 of them carry an origin score out of 100, and every score shows the sources behind it, so you can check our work instead of taking our word for it.

We're a small company in Northern Ontario, and our product catalogue lives on servers in Canada. We don't sell the products we write about, and no one can pay us for a better score.

Every time you choose a Canadian maker, you back Canadian work. Our job is to make that choice easier.

How we decide what's Canadian

Each score looks at seven signals: where the product is made, where its ingredients or materials come from, who owns the brand, where the business is run, where the work is done, where it's packed, and where it's designed. Manufacturing and inputs count the most. If we can't find evidence for a signal, we leave it out rather than guess, and if we can't confirm where something is made, we say so.

Our score is our own reading of public evidence. It isn't a government certification, and we never present it as a “Product of Canada” or “Made in Canada” claim. Those claims belong to the company, under rules set by the CFIA and the Competition Bureau.

How we make money

Brands can pay a small per-product fee to have a product researched and listed. That fee pays for the research, not for a result. Payment never buys a score, a verdict or a better spot on the site, and most products here were added without anyone paying. We don't currently earn commission on outbound or “Buy Now” links. → Our disclosure policy

Found a mistake?

Tell us. Corrections are free, and they have nothing to do with whether a brand has paid us. Brands can send sourcing details and we'll re-score; anyone can flag something that looks wrong. → Send a correction · How corrections work
