Canadian alternatives to Google Drive
Last verified:
Short answer
Sync.com is the clearest consumer file-sync product we could verify as a Canadian company that says it stores files in data centres it operates in Toronto. There is no Canadian equivalent of a free Google account with Drive built in. Proton Drive is a common private alternative, and Proton is based in Switzerland.
What you are replacing
Google Drive is Google’s file product. We did not open a current page that states where a consumer Drive file is stored by default, so that cell is unverified.
People also compare Drive with Dropbox and OneDrive. Those are separate US companies. They are not given a row here unless we could cite a primary page for the fact that matters, which is who owns the service and where the files sit.
Google’s locations page lists the Googleplex in Mountain View among its offices. That list is not a legal headquarters filing.
Comparison
Verdicts use the digital services rubric, not the grocery score. A Canada region on a foreign cloud is not a Canadian operator. Notes about PIPEDA or the US CLOUD Act are not legal advice.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sync.com | Sync’s own article says Sync is 100% Canadian owned and operated. | The same article describes the service as Canadian. A street address was not on the pages we opened, so the city of the head office is not repeated here beyond the Toronto data centres. | The article says files are always stored on Canadian soil, in multiple data centres in Toronto that Sync operates. | Sync says it operates those Toronto data centres. The security page says data is replicated across SOC-2 certified data centre locations. It does not name Amazon Web Services, Azure, or Google Cloud. | Paid plans for individuals and teams. On 1 October 2026 the pricing page was showing a discount, including a 30-day trial message. Check the live price before you buy. | Everyday file sync from a company that says the files stay in Toronto data centres it operates. | Canadian-operated, data in CanadaConfidence: Medium |
| Proton Drive | Part of Proton. The about page says the Proton Foundation in Geneva is the controlling shareholder. Not Canadian. | Geneva, Switzerland. Proton AG, Route de la Galaise 32, 1228 Plan-les-Ouates. | Proton Drive says files benefit from Swiss privacy law. It does not describe storage in Canada. | Proton’s own service. The Drive page says end-to-end encryption and that Proton cannot read the files. | Free account, plus paid storage. The Drive page described a paid Plus tier while we read it. Confirm the current number on Proton’s pricing page. | Encrypted cloud files when a Swiss company is acceptable. | Not a Canadian optionConfidence: High |
| Google Drive | Google. The company info page identifies the CEO of Google and Alphabet. Not a Canadian company. | Mountain View office, on Google’s locations page. | Unverified for consumer Drive. We did not confirm a default storage country on a primary page during this check. | Google’s own service. This row is the incumbent, not a Canadian alternative. | Google publishes free and paid storage. We did not re-quote a gigabyte allowance in this check. | Staying in Google’s ecosystem. It is not a Canadian option. | Not a Canadian optionConfidence: Medium |
Where there is no true Canadian option
Sync.com is a real Canadian file-sync service on the company’s own account. It is not a free Google-account bundle, and the pricing page was showing a discount when we checked, so we are not locking in a dollar figure.
A Canada region on a US cloud is not the same thing. Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 data-locations page lists Canada as a local region for some business services. That does not make OneDrive a Canadian company. Consumer OneDrive residency was not confirmed on that page.
Proton Drive is end-to-end encrypted and Swiss. It is an honest alternative if your goal is privacy from the vendor. It is not a Canadian option.
Questions
Is Sync.com the same as storing files in a Canada region of Google or Microsoft?
No. Sync’s article says a Canadian company operates data centres in Toronto. A Canada region of Google Drive or OneDrive is still those US companies’ cloud. The owner and the region are separate facts.
Is there a free Canadian Google Drive?
We did not find a free Canadian file-sync service at Drive’s scale. Sync.com’s pricing page showed paid plans and a trial. Proton Drive has a free account and is Swiss.
Where does consumer Google Drive store files?
Unverified on this page. We did not rely on a blog post for that. Google Workspace business customers have their own data-region settings, and we could not open a current Google data-regions document during this check.
