As the Olympics are now underway, the streets will be flooded with those looking to celebrate the memorable moments. But when celebrating the good times, there are a few things that we all have to remember: reduce, reuse, recycle. How many times have we all been told when we were younger to abide by the three Rs? Well why not look at these next few weeks as a fresh start to change those old habits and work to support VANOC’s movement of environmental sustainability.
There are little things that can be done here and there to help the environment so why not start with those? After all, every effort counts. All around the city of Vancouver, there are places to dispose of your garbage and recyclables. Take the time to sort out your water bottle from that empty burger wrapper. While you’re getting down to the different celebration venues, consider taking public transit. Those holding Olympic tickets will have access to free transit for the day but don’t stop there; if you do not have tickets, consider taking transit anyway to avoid those traffic jams.
Even if you aren’t at the heart of all this action, you can still help Canada take a step towards environmental sustainability. Those little actions now can lead to lifestyle changes that will ultimately help the movement to a greener nation. While the David Suzuki Foundation has awarded these 2010 Games a bronze medal for their climate protection efforts, why not become an “athlete” yourself and join in what is considered one of the greenest Olympic Games so far. Do your part and see how green you can be, challenge your friends to do the same and see who can get the “gold medal”.
